The rains, which began on September 27 and lasted for more than 72 hours, also caused widespread damage in and around the capital. Hundreds of homes, schools and hospitals were damaged. Forty-four of Nepal's 77 districts were affected, with many cut off from the outside world, Bridges and roads washed out and power lines and telecommunications networks disrupted. Security forces and volunteers have rescued about 4,500 people. It is estimated that more than 7,600 families have been severely affected, many of them living in informal settlements that have been washed away.
