As least seven people have died after heavy rain and flooding in the provinces of Jiangxi, Guangxi and Guizhou in southern China over the last few days.

Jiangxi

Severe weather including hail, strong winds and flooding triggered by heavy rain affected China’s Jiangxi Province from 06 June, 2019. Provincial emergency management authorities reported flooding in 9 cities and 45 counties including Ji’an, Shangrao and Yingtan.

According to China’s Xinhua news agency, as of 08 June, 6 people were confirmed dead and one missing. A total of 514,000 people were affected and 45,000 displaced. Fifty-eight houses were destroyed and dozens damaged. Crops and farmland also suffered damage.

The severe weather in Jiangxi prompted the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) to jointly activate a level-IV emergency response and send a special work team and relief materials to the hit areas.

Guangxi and Guizhou

In the south eastern province of Guangxi, torrential rain from around 09 June caused flooding that left at least 1 dead and 4 missing.

Xinhua said the hardest hit area was the county of Quanzhou, administered by the city of Guilin, where 180,000 people were affected and 8,380 evacuated.

Heavy rain and floods in late May in the province left 7 dead and 9,000 displaced.

Around 50,000 people were also affected by the recent heavy rain in the province of Guizhou.
