Thousands of people have been displaced by flooding on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi over the last few days, according to the country’s disaster management agency BNPB (Badan Nasional Penanggulangan Bencana).
At least 3 provinces on the island – Southeast Sulawesi, Central Sulawesi and South Sulawesi – have been affected. A young child reportedly died in the flooding in fatality was reported in Konawe Regency in Southeast Sulawesi Province.
According to BNPB, flooding in North Konawe Regency has displaced 4,198 people from around 1,000 families. Over 70 houses have been washed away and thousands more submerged. Bridges, roads, health facilities, crops and fisheries have all been damaged.
Disaster authorities reported problems reaching the affected areas due to the flooding.
Elsewhere in the province, a baby has reportedly died in floods in Konawe Regency, where 36 people have been displaced.
BNPB also report flooding in Sidenreng Rappang Regency in the villages of Tanru Tedong and Salobukkang. The villages are situated close to the Bla river (Sungai Bla). Flooding has affected 1,452 families and damaged 200 homes, as well as roads, crops, bridges and schools.
In Central Sulawesi, flooding hit Morowali Regency, affecting 561 families, flooding or damaging around 50 homes and a bridge.
Around 6,000 people were displaced by floods in South Sulawesi Province earlier this year.
A series of earthquakes on the island of Sulawesi in Indonesia in September 2018 triggered a tsunami that flooded northern parts of the island, causing widespread damage and destruction.
